Traveling from the United States to the Middle East and beyond will soon become more convenient, thanks to a new direct flight from Etihad Airways. The national airline of the United Arab Emirates has announced that it will introduce a nonstop service connecting Charlotte, North Carolina, with Abu Dhabi, starting May 4, 2026. This marks the first time Charlotte and Abu Dhabi will be linked by a direct route, eliminating the need for lengthy layovers or additional flight connections. The new service, operated by Etihad’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, will depart Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) at 6:40 p.m. and land at Zayed International Airport (AUH) in Abu Dhabi at 12:25 p.m. the next day. This flight is scheduled to take 13 hours and 45 minutes, making travel significantly faster compared to current options, which typically require at least three more hours in transit. Passengers onboard can look forward to a comfortable journey with amenities such as in-seat television, Wi-Fi, charging outlets, and USB ports.

For those flying in business class, Etihad offers lie-flat seats, access to airport lounges, and even a chauffeur service to and from Zayed International Airport for a seamless travel experience.

Etihad CEO Antonoaldo Neves commented, “Charlotte represents a strategic addition to our U.S. network, unlocking direct access to one of the country’s most dynamic and fast-growing regions. We’re excited to be the first airline from our region to serve this market, and we look forward to connecting more travelers to Abu Dhabi and beyond.”

Upon arrival in Abu Dhabi, travelers can explore the city’s renowned attractions, including theme parks such as Ferrari World and Warner Bros. World, as well as the upcoming Disney theme park on Yas Island. The new route also offers excellent connections to Etihad’s wider network, giving U.S. travelers direct access to destinations like Bali, Bangkok, Beijing, Melbourne, Mumbai, and Singapore.

Tickets for the new Charlotte – Abu Dhabi service are now available for purchase through Etihad’s website and authorized travel agents. One-way fares start at $1,092 for economy class and $6,014 for business class. For travelers eager to experience Etihad before the new route launches, the airline is offering a limited-time 30 percent discount on premium cabins for select international routes, with notable deals from New York to Doha and New Delhi.

As Abu Dhabi’s tourism industry continues to grow, the city is positioning itself as a leading global destination, combining luxury accommodations, diverse entertainment options, and a rich cultural scene. The addition of this direct Etihad route makes it even easier for U.S. travelers to discover all that Abu Dhabi and the broader region have to offer.

The post Etihad Airways Launches Direct Charlotte to Abu Dhabi Route, Expanding U.S. Connections to the Middle East and Asia first appeared on Travel Lyra – Where Travel Stories Spark Your Next Adventure.

The magic of Disney is heading to the Middle East for the very first time. The Walt Disney Company has announced its plans to build a new world-class theme park destination in Abu Dhabi, marking the company’s first new theme park since Shanghai Disneyland opened in 2016. This groundbreaking resort will become Disney’s seventh global theme park destination.

In a major partnership with Miral, a leader in entertainment and leisure development in the UAE, Disney will create a waterfront theme park resort on Yas Island. Already recognized as a global entertainment hub, Yas Island is home to iconic attractions like Ferrari World and Warner Bros. World, as well as luxury hotels and innovative leisure experiences.

“This seventh Disney theme park resort will blend the timeless magic of Disney stories and characters with Abu Dhabi’s vibrant culture, stunning coastline, and architectural beauty,” the Disney Parks Blog revealed. According to Disney CEO Robert A. Iger, the project will rise in spectacular fashion, seamlessly integrating cutting-edge technology with Abu Dhabi’s unique character to deliver an immersive and modern guest experience.

The project will be a collaborative effort — Disney’s creative teams and Imagineers will provide vision and leadership, while Miral will take charge of development, construction, and operation, similar to the successful model used for Tokyo Disneyland Resort. This alliance gives Disney a chance to connect with new audiences, while further establishing Yas Island as a premier destination for family entertainment and leisure.

While detailed information on the park’s attractions has yet to be released, the announcement confirmed that the resort will offer themed accommodations, a variety of dining and retail experiences, and attractions that celebrate both Disney’s beloved heritage and the futuristic, cultural spirit of Abu Dhabi. “Our resort in Abu Dhabi will be the most advanced and interactive destination in our portfolio,” noted Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Experiences, emphasizing how the shoreline location will enrich storytelling possibilities.

Yas Island’s prime location makes it an ideal site for Disney’s latest project. The UAE is served by the world’s largest airline hub, making it easily accessible, with one-third of the world’s population within a four-hour flight. As Miral’s Group CEO Mohamed Abdalla Al Zaabi highlighted, “Bringing a Disney theme park resort to Yas Island marks a historic milestone in our journey to advance the island’s position as a global destination for exceptional entertainment and leisure.”

No official opening date for the Abu Dhabi Disney resort has been announced. When completed, it will join a growing roster of iconic attractions on Yas Island, which already boasts Ferrari World — home to the world’s fastest roller coaster — and Warner Bros. World.

The post Disney Unveils Plans for New Theme Park on Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island first appeared on Travel Lyra – Where Travel Stories Spark Your Next Adventure.

If you think scuba diving means only ocean life and open water, think again. My dive at Deep Dive Dubai a staggering 197-foot-deep pool filled with 3.7 million gallons of crystal-clear, sanitized fresh water completely rewrote my expectations of what an indoor dive can be. Here’s why this high-tech underwater playground in the UAE just might belong on every diver’s bucket list. Redefining Adventure: Descending Into Deep Dive Dubai As a diver with more than 130 open-water dives logged, I’ve witnessed everything from sea turtles and manta rays to vibrant coral gardens. The pool’s exterior shaped like a giant oyster is a tribute to the country’s pearl-diving heritage. Inside, you plunge into a world designed for play, exploration, and skill-building. This isn’t just a pool it’s an entire sunken city.

Redefining Adventure: Descending Into Deep Dive Dubai

As a diver with more than 130 open-water dives logged, I’ve witnessed everything from sea turtles and manta rays to vibrant coral gardens. I expected a pool to feel tame by comparison. Instead, Deep Dive Dubai delivered a dreamlike experience. The pool’s exterior shaped like a giant oyster is a tribute to the country’s pearl-diving heritage. Inside, you plunge into a world designed for play, exploration, and skill-building.

This isn’t just a pool it’s an entire sunken city. The controlled environment, consistent 86°F water, and state-of-the-art filtration using NASA volcanic rock technology create perfect conditions every time. Visibility is flawless, the ambiance is set by 27 underwater speakers and 164 dimmable lights, and the adventure is real, even with a guide by your side.

Exploring the “Sunken City”: Props, Playgrounds, and Underwater Surprises

On my descent, I passed the roots of a sprawling faux banyan tree just the start of a wild aquatic journey. Below, every level brings new surprises: you’ll find rooms staged with photo-ready props and whimsical sets that turn every dive into a choose-your-own-adventure story. My highlights:

Snoozing in a submerged bed while bubbles drift overhead.

Reading a magazine on a park bench under water.

Riding a motorcycle, playing pinball, and even tickling the keys of a sunken baby grand piano.

Testing my skills with chess, pool, and foosball where competition with my guide felt anything but artificial.

Soaring for a slow-motion slam dunk on the underwater basketball hoop (with a few epic rebounds).

Is it gimmicky? Yes. Is it unforgettable? Absolutely. The atmosphere is part Instagram museum, part interactive theme park, and pure diver fantasy. You’ll leave with both adrenaline and a phone full of surreal photos.

Safety and Spectacle: Why Controlled Doesn’t Mean Boring

Despite the cameras, observation windows, and safety-first approach, Deep Dive Dubai never feels sterile or dull. Instead, the predictability enhances the sense of fun. Underwater cameras (for safety and spectator entertainment), clear signage, and friendly staff help you relax and enjoy the unique environment.

“Visibility in the Gulf is frequently compromised due to currents and sediment, resulting in unpredictable conditions influenced by tides, boat traffic, and fluctuating water temperatures. In contrast, Deep Dive Dubai offers a fully controlled and predictable diving experience.”

—Jesper Kjøller, Deep Dive Dubai’s senior marketing supervisor

Unlike the Gulf, where conditions can change in an instant, here every aspect from water temperature to lighting is designed to let divers focus on skills, fun, and creative exploration. Whether you’re a seasoned veteran or a first-timer, there’s something for everyone, including professional training and freediving courses.

Can a Pool Dive Be Worth It for Ocean Lovers?

There’s no marine life here (except fellow divers), but what Deep Dive Dubai lacks in natural wonders, it makes up for with creativity, comfort, and sheer novelty. If you want to master buoyancy, try new techniques, or simply play underwater like nowhere else, it’s hard to beat. For me, it was a welcome reminder that even as a veteran diver, there are always new experiences to be had sometimes in the most unexpected places.

I may still prefer wild encounters with sea creatures, but for a “slam dunk” of a dive, Deep Dive Dubai delivered in ways I never imagined.

The post Diving Into the Surreal: My Slam Dunk Adventure at the World’s Deepest Pool in Dubai first appeared on Travel Lyra – Where Travel Stories Spark Your Next Adventure.

Here’s a day-by-day guide to making the most of three unforgettable days in Marrakesh, from riad breakfasts to hidden courtyards, opulent museums, and the kind of meals you’ll remember long after you’ve left.

Day 1: Riad Welcome, Palatial History, and Rooftop Dining

Ease into Marrakesh with a warm welcome at your riad—an intimate, traditional Moroccan home set around a tranquil courtyard. Many riads, like the seven-bedroom Riad Adriana, serve mint tea and cookies upon arrival, offer cozy rooms with artistic touches, and feature lush courtyards dotted with rose petals and candlelight. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner is often served on the rooftop with views of the city’s terracotta skyline.

Start your exploration at Dar El Bacha, once the palace of Thami el Glaoui and now the Museum of Confluences, a masterpiece of carved wood, tiled courtyards, and orange trees. If you’re a coffee lover, aim for an early visit to snag a table at Bacha Coffee, where red-fezzed servers pour rich brews in an Art Deco setting.

Wander Rue Dar El Bacha for fresh juice from street vendors, then wind through the medina’s maze to Le Terrasse des Épices. This rooftop restaurant serves inventive cocktails (try the Marrakchi Mule) and a menu that fuses Moroccan tradition with global flavors—don’t miss the beef tenderloin or five-hour-cooked tanjia ravioli. Enjoy the sunset as the city glows in shades of orange and pink.

Day 2: Art Gardens, Modern Bites, and the Magic of the Medina

Rise early for a rooftop breakfast: Moroccan pancakes, flatbread, sweet amlou paste, fresh juice, and strong coffee. Then head to Gueliz, the city’s “new” French-built quarter, where art galleries and trendy cafés await. Don’t skip the Jardin Majorelle—a lush, cobalt-blue botanical escape once owned by Yves Saint Laurent.

For brunch, try Blue Ribbon Marrakech, offering farm-fresh, organic dishes. Back in the medina, get lost in the Souk Haddadine for metalwork, Souk Smata for slippers, and Souk Cherratine for leather goods. If you’re searching for architecture, step into the Medersa Ben Youssef, a centuries-old Islamic school adorned with stunning tilework, carved wood, and tranquil courtyards.

Dinner awaits at L’Mida, a contemporary rooftop with sweeping city views and a creative Moroccan-Mediterranean menu. The chicken-lemon tagine tacos are a must, and the mocktails—like the basil-and-raspberry Mrahba—are refreshingly inventive.

Day 3: Markets, Ancient Palaces, and Final Indulgences

Kick off your last day at Mandala Society, a third-wave café perfect for a leisurely coffee. Then, dive into the electric energy of Jemaa el-Fnaa, Marrakesh’s legendary square filled with food stalls, musicians, and snake charmers—an essential city experience.

Seek quiet at El Badi Palace, a sprawling 16th-century ruin whose vast courtyards and gardens now host sunbathing cats and nesting storks. Early visits mean fewer crowds and a chance to soak in the echoes of the past.

Refuel with mint tea and Moroccan pastries at Le Terrasse des Épices’ pastry shop in Souk Cherifia. Spend the afternoon shopping for hand-painted ceramics and high-fashion finds along Rue Bab Doukkala, Rue Dar el Bacha, and Route Sidi Abdelaziz. Recharge with a to-go drink from Kesh Cup before preparing for your final night.

Wrap up with dinner at your riad or celebrate on the terrace at Kabana Rooftop Food & Cocktails, where sushi, Mediterranean-Latin cuisine, and panoramic minaret views create a fitting finale.

Essential Tips for Visiting Marrakesh

Before your adventure, there are a few practicalities to know:

Cash is king. Most souks and smaller spots only take dirhams. Get cash from ATMs at the airport or in town and carry small bills for easy transactions.

Stay connected. Free SIM cards from Maroc Telecom, Orange Maroc, or Inwi are available at the airport; a few dirhams buys enough data for a short stay. Pocket Wi-Fi is a good backup if your phone is locked.

Learn a little local language. A few words in French or Darija (Moroccan Arabic) go a long way. Try “bonjour” (hello) and “shukran” (thank you).

Bartering is expected. In the souks, bargaining is the norm—start low, stay polite, and enjoy the ritual. Higher-end boutiques usually have fixed prices.

Here’s an inside look at what makes Rwanda’s hidden gems shine—from wildlife-packed savannas to lively design studios, rain forest treks, and luxury stays with heart.

Wildlife and Wilderness: Rediscovering Akagera National Park

Our journey began in Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s only Big Five reserve, just a few hours east of Kigali. This is where Africa’s wild heart beats strongest: we spotted hippos on land and in the lakes, watched rhinos graze with their calves at dusk, and felt the thrill of seeing lions and elephants in an environment once devastated by poaching but now dramatically reborn.

The Wilderness Magashi camp, with its solar-powered tents and family-friendly touches, offers comfort and adventure in equal measure. Guides like Herman Nkusi bring the park alive with stories and facts, making even the smallest safari guests feel like explorers. Today, Akagera is proof of Rwanda’s quiet, determined conservation miracle—a sanctuary brought back to life, thriving against all odds.

Kigali’s Creativity: From Fashion Boutiques to Social Enterprise

Back in Kigali, the capital pulses with a new creative energy. At The Retreat by Heaven, families unwind by the pool and dive into the city’s dynamic cultural scene. Local designers like Moses Turahirwa (of Moshions), Sarah Legrand (K’tsobe), and Maryse Mbonyumutwa (Asantii) welcome visitors into their studios. Here, you can order a bespoke bracelet or shop for original fashion, supporting Rwanda’s emerging style scene.

A highlight: visiting the Pink Mango factory in the city’s Special Economic Zone. With over 1,000 mostly female employees, this operation is a hub for global fashion brands and homegrown labels alike. We toured the bustling factory floor and saw firsthand how clothing, opportunity, and empowerment are woven together in Rwanda’s new economy.

Adrenaline and Awe in Nyungwe National Park

Next, we set off for the lush canopies of Nyungwe National Park, Rwanda’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa’s oldest rain forests. The Canopy Walkway—a 525-foot-long suspension bridge suspended high above the jungle—offered thrills and unbeatable views for travelers young and old. Nyungwe is a playground for nature lovers: think waterfall hikes, birdwatching, and challenging chimpanzee treks for the bold.

Our base was One&Only Nyungwe House, an exquisite lodge nestled in a tea plantation, where family-friendly activities abound. Kids can try cooking and painting while adults venture deep into the rain forest for close-up encounters with wildlife. The magic of Nyungwe is the chance to immerse in nature and Rwandan culture side by side.

Meeting Gorillas, Learning Conservation

No Rwanda trip would be complete without an encounter with its most iconic residents—the mountain gorillas of Volcanoes National Park. At the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, children can explore interactive exhibits on gorilla behavior, conservation, and history. The experience brings the stories of legendary primatologist Dian Fossey and Rwanda’s critically endangered gorillas to life for all ages.

For those old enough, gorilla trekking is a true bucket-list moment—hiking through thick rain forest, braving mud and fire ants, and sharing an hour with a gorilla family in their natural home. For younger children, alternative adventures await: drumming lessons, archery, pool time, and cultural workshops at luxury lodges like One&Only Gorilla’s Nest and Singita Kwitonda Lodge.

How to Plan Your Rwandan Family Adventure

Rwanda’s tourism is opening up, with conservation at its core and a growing menu of family-friendly options. For a seamless, deeply rewarding experience, consider using a safari specialist like Legacy Untold, who can arrange logistics, expert guides, transfers, and custom excursions across the country. Book gorilla trekking permits well in advance, especially for travelers ages 15 and up, and look for accommodations that cater to multi-generational groups.

From hippos in Akagera to the design studios of Kigali, tea fields of Nyungwe, and the rare thrill of locking eyes with a wild gorilla, Rwanda will surprise you at every turn. The country’s resilience, creativity, and natural wonders are best experienced together—making it an ideal destination for families ready to write their own African story.

There’s nothing quite like experiencing a new place on foot, and if active exploration is your style, there’s now a clear destination for your next adventure. Quelimane, a vibrant seaport city in Mozambique, has just been named the world’s most walk-friendly city, topping a major new global study on active mobility and sustainable urban living. The research, published by The Economist and conducted by Rafael Prieto-Curiel and Juan Pablo Ospina, analyzed the mobility habits of 850 million people across 794 cities worldwide. The findings were definitive: in Quelimane, over 82 percent of the city’s 349,842 residents walk as their primary mode of transportation, with an additional 9 percent relying on bicycles. This makes Quelimane not just a leader in walkability but a genuine example of how cities can support healthy, sustainable lifestyles. Experts from Sustainable Mobility emphasized the importance of strengthening pedestrian and cycling infrastructure in Quelimane and throughout Africa. As urban growth continues, there’s a pressing need to maintain and improve conditions for walkers and cyclists. Quelimane is already taking steps forward by introducing cycling paths, dedicated cycling highways, and shared bicycle programs – measures aimed at keeping the city’s streets accessible and safe for everyone. Other notable cities …

Experts from Sustainable Mobility emphasized the importance of strengthening pedestrian and cycling infrastructure in Quelimane and throughout Africa. Quelimane is already taking steps forward by introducing cycling paths, dedicated cycling highways, and shared bicycle programs – measures aimed at keeping the city’s streets accessible and safe for everyone.

Other notable cities in the walkability rankings include Peja in Kosovo, Utrecht in the Netherlands, Shkoder in Albania, and Granollers in Spain. Interestingly, the study noted a trend: the wealthier a city is, the more likely its residents are to depend on cars, despite many officials’ ambitions to make urban life greener and more affordable.

“Peak car” – the moment when car ownership worldwide begins to decline – may be approaching, especially as younger generations drive less than ever before. In the United States, for example, the number of 16-year-olds with driver’s licenses has dropped by nearly 27 percent since 2000. As walking and cycling become more popular, destinations like Quelimane are leading the way toward a future where the best way to see a city is on your own two feet.

The post Quelimane in Mozambique Crowned the Most Walkable City in the World first appeared on Travel Lyra – Where Travel Stories Spark Your Next Adventure.

Memorial Day Weekend 2025 is shaping up to be the busiest on record, with more than 45 million Americans hitting the roads, skies, and seas. According to AAA, travel volume will rise by over 1.4 million compared to last year. Whether you’re planning to fly, drive, or sail, here’s what you need to know for a smoother trip.

Air Travel Surges: Top Tips and Busiest Destinations

Airports across the country will be packed, as United Airlines prepares to fly 3.8 million people—a 300,000 increase year-over-year. Popular destinations include Orlando, Las Vegas, and Boston. American Airlines is running 38,000 flights during the holiday stretch, although its single busiest day will fall in July.

United is encouraging travelers to use its app for expedited bag drops and to take advantage of TSA PreCheck Touchless ID at major airports like Chicago O’Hare (ORD) and Los Angeles (LAX). For those flying from Newark (EWR), United’s flexibility waiver is extended through May 23 in case of disruptions.

Highway Havoc: Record Road Trips, Cheap Gas, and Rental Demand

Americans are taking to the highways in record numbers, with 39.4 million traveling by car—up by a million from 2024. AAA warns of a dramatic 83% surge in Los Angeles traffic on I-5 North on May 23 at 5 p.m., making it the biggest hot spot. Other busy routes include Houston’s I-45 South to Galveston and Denver’s I-25 South.

The good news? Gas prices will average just $3.02 a gallon—the lowest for a Memorial Day weekend in four years, according to GasBuddy. That’s a major relief from the 2022 peak of $4.60 per gallon. Despite economic uncertainty, experts anticipate a robust travel season as millions plan longer getaways.

Rental cars are also in high demand. Hertz has reported strong bookings in Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Seattle. The company has rolled out a new fleet of Jeep Wrangler 4xE vehicles and is celebrating with a special 10% discount for Jeep rentals over the weekend.

Cruise Season Kicks Off: Alaska Tops Domestic Sailings

Cruises are set to launch the summer travel season, with Alaska ports such as Fairbanks, Anchorage, and Juneau emerging as top picks. AAA notes strong demand for Alaska itineraries, highlighting cruising’s continued post-pandemic rebound.

Memorial Day Weekend is also a prime time to book new voyages. Royal Caribbean is offering up to $800 in instant savings for bookings on the Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas, plus extra deals for second guests and children.

Final Travel Reminders

Expect crowded airports and highways; allow extra time for check-in, security, and traffic delays.

Download airline and rental car apps for streamlined service and updates.

Plan your road trip routes in advance to avoid peak congestion times.

Take advantage of low gas prices and seasonal rental car deals.

If cruising, check port protocols and promotions for last-minute savings.

With planning and flexibility, you can make the most of Memorial Day Weekend 2025—whether you’re heading to the beach, the mountains, or just out for a long-awaited adventure.

The post Record-Breaking Memorial Day Weekend Travel in 2025: What Flyers, Drivers, and Cruisers Need to Know first appeared on Travel Lyra – Where Travel Stories Spark Your Next Adventure.

As summer gets underway, new data from the Surfrider Foundation has raised concerns for travelers and locals heading to some of the country’s most beautiful beaches. The 2024 Clean Water Report has found that one of Hawaii’s most iconic spots, Kahalu’u Beach on Oahu, is the No. 1 bacteria hot spot in the United States, with an alarming 92 percent of samples failing to meet health safety standards. Every year, Surfrider Foundation tests hundreds of beaches to track water quality and protect public health. This season, the numbers paint a worrying picture: many favorite destinations could be hiding invisible health threats. The report highlights that 92 percent of water samples collected from Kahalu’u Beach were over the state’s legal limit for bacteria in recreational water. Waikomo Stream at Koloa Landing in Poipu, also in Hawaii, followed closely with a 90 percent failure rate. The list of the ten most bacteria-polluted beaches is not limited to Hawaii – it stretches across the East and West Coasts, as well as Puerto Rico.

These beaches are deeply important to their communities, both for recreation and the local economy, but pollution threatens both public health and the environment.

According to the report, major sources of contamination include stormwater runoff, agricultural discharge, industrial waste, and untreated sewage. After heavy rain, pollutants like road dust, oil, animal waste, fertilizers, and dangerous chemicals wash into the ocean, sometimes along with raw sewage. This combination creates high bacteria levels that are invisible to the eye but hazardous for anyone swimming, surfing, or playing in the water.

To monitor the scale of the problem, the Blue Water Task Force (BWTF) operated 60 labs across the country in 2024, analyzing more than 10,000 water samples from 604 different sites. The Surfrider Foundation also works with volunteers to collect data from beaches that would otherwise go untested and to check areas suspected of being pollution sources. Results from these efforts were sobering: 80 percent of all tested beaches and sites had high bacteria counts exceeding state safety requirements.

Surfrider Foundation, which has been fighting for clean water since 1984, expressed its concerns about recent federal budget plans. The President’s 2026 proposal would cut all funding for the EPA’s BEACH Act Grants program, which supports water quality monitoring and public notification in 35 coastal states and territories. Without this funding, families may have no warning about dangerous pollution levels at beaches across the U.S.

In response, Surfrider has launched a petition urging Congress to restore EPA funding for clean water programs. Volunteers are active at each of the top ten bacteria hot spots, sharing information and helping beachgoers understand the risks. The foundation hopes that publicizing these findings will put pressure on local and federal authorities to tackle the pollution sources and protect beachgoers.

Hawaii’s beaches attract millions every year, making it even more crucial to address water contamination and safeguard the natural beauty of the islands for the future.

The post Hawaii’s Kahalu’u Beach Named Top Bacteria Risk in New U.S. Beach Water Quality Report first appeared on Travel Lyra – Where Travel Stories Spark Your Next Adventure.

Victory Cruise Lines is setting a new trend for design enthusiasts, offering a series of Great Lakes voyages that showcase some of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most remarkable architectural works. The cruise line’s recently announced partnership with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation is giving travelers a rare opportunity to immerse themselves in the architect’s legacy through curated onboard programs and in-depth excursions to significant Wright sites across Illinois, Michigan, and Canada.
Once in port, the excursions bring guests face to face with some of Wright’s most famous buildings. In Chicago, where Wright began his career working alongside renowned architect Louis Sullivan, cruisers dock at Navy Pier and can participate in the “Frank Lloyd Wright: His Home & Vision for the Future” shore excursion. This unique tour includes four historic sites, among them the iconic Frederick C. Robie House, an architectural masterpiece of Prairie-style design, and Wright’s own home and studio. Oak Park, just outside downtown Chicago, boasts the largest collection of Wright residences in the world, with 25 projects concentrated in the area.

Michigan ports also offer exclusive access to rare Wright homes. From Muskegon, guests can tour the Meyer May House in Grand Rapids, a 1909 Prairie-style residence, as well as the David M. and Hattie Amberg House, built in 1911. In Detroit, travelers can explore The Smith House, an example of Wright’s innovative approach to creating affordable, high-quality homes for American families.

These architectural journeys are available on a variety of itineraries, including the 10-night “Toronto to Chicago” and “Chicago to Toronto” cruises, as well as a special 15-night roundtrip from Chicago. Fares for these unique cruises start at $5,779 per person, making them an attractive choice for anyone eager to combine travel with a deep dive into American architectural history.

The post Great Lakes Cruise Offers Exclusive Frank Lloyd Wright Architectural Tours in the U.S. and Canada first appeared on Travel Lyra – Where Travel Stories Spark Your Next Adventure.

A new report from GoBankingRates reveals that Rio Verde, Arizona, stands out as the most popular retirement location in both Arizona and Florida, two of the country’s top states for retirees. The study not only ranks retirement destinations but also calculates how much savings are needed to enjoy a 15-year retirement in these sunny spots. Arizona and Florida have long been known as retirement magnets, thanks to their favorable weather and tax-friendly policies. According to GoBankingRates, these two states dominate the list of America’s most sought-after retirement towns, with half of the top 50 located within their borders. But despite their popularity, the true cost of retiring in these destinations may surprise many future retirees. The research found that depending on the city, a single person or couple may need at least $1 million in savings to cover expenses for 15 years in retirement, even after factoring in Social Security benefits.

However, Rio Verde, Arizona, offers a more accessible option. With 86.6 percent of its population aged 65 or older, Rio Verde not only boasts a strong retirement community but is also one of the most affordable places to settle down. GoBankingRates estimates that a single person would need $896,947 to retire comfortably in Rio Verde for 15 years, while a couple would need $726,239. Both amounts include expected Social Security income.

To determine these figures, GoBankingRates analyzed data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2023 American Community Survey, focusing on towns with populations of at least 1,000 and where a minimum of 30 percent are retirees. The cost of living was calculated using indexes from Sperling’s BestPlaces, including expenses for groceries, healthcare, housing, utilities, transportation, and miscellaneous costs. The final calculations also incorporated national averages for spending by households aged 65 and up, as well as average Social Security income, to arrive at the annual cost of retirement for singles and couples.

All of Arizona ranked high for affordability, with only one town – Carefree, Arizona – surpassing the $1 million mark for a 15-year retirement. In Carefree, a single person would need $1,416,504, while a couple would need $1,245,795. On the other end of the spectrum, Quartzsite, Arizona, was identified as the most affordable location, with a single retiree needing just $230,067 to cover 15 years.

Meanwhile, Florida’s most desirable towns come with a steeper price tag. GoBankingRates found that retirees in eight cities across the Sunshine State – including Indian River Shores, Longboat Key, Palm Beach, and Marco Island – will require at least $1 million in savings for a single or couple to retire. In some areas, like Palm Beach, the costs skyrocket, with a solo retiree needing $11,637,136 and a couple requiring $11,466,427 for a 15-year stay.

For retirees looking to stretch their savings while enjoying great weather and a vibrant community of peers, Arizona’s Rio Verde offers an appealing balance between cost and quality of life, solidifying its position as a top choice in the latest rankings.

The post Rio Verde, Arizona Named Top Affordable Retirement Hotspot for Low Taxes and Sunny Weather first appeared on Travel Lyra – Where Travel Stories Spark Your Next Adventure.
