The U.S. Department of State has issued a new Level 1 Travel Advisory for Switzerland, encouraging visitors to “exercise normal precautions” when traveling in the country. This recent alert, published on May 20, reminds travelers that Switzerland—ranked the fifth safest country globally—remains a secure destination, even as the advisory draws attention to current events and general safety tips.
Level 1 is the lowest level of travel advisory issued by the U.S. government and simply suggests travelers remain aware of their surroundings, but there is no immediate threat or need to alter travel plans. The system includes four levels in total, with Level 2 recommending increased caution, Level 3 advising reconsideration of travel, and Level 4 instructing to avoid travel entirely.
The State Department’s advisory comes at a time when Switzerland, a major destination in Europe, recently experienced protests and demonstrations during the Eurovision Song Contest, according to French media reports. The security notice does not confirm a direct link to these events but highlights recent public gatherings and mentions a moderate crime risk in Geneva.
Despite these notes, Switzerland consistently ranks as one of the safest countries worldwide, even ahead of popular destinations like Japan and Denmark, according to a recent study by Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection. Travelers are encouraged to register for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), a free service providing up-to-date information and alerts for U.S. citizens abroad. The State Department also recommends purchasing travel insurance and preparing a basic safety plan before overseas trips.
“Use your best judgement to avoid unsafe situations,” the State Department advises. “Think ahead and have a plan for emergencies. Consider carrying personal safety whistles or alarms and, if possible, taking a self-defense course before travel.”
The advisory for Switzerland is part of a broader effort by U.S. and international agencies to keep travelers informed as summer travel season approaches. For example, the Centers for Disease Control has also recently issued health alerts for dengue fever outbreaks in countries such as Brazil, Fiji, and Mexico.
